"Commercial Real Estate "may conjure up an imagine of a broker in formal business attire as a daily routine. But what may surprise you, is that for many, it's a much more casual and practical dress code environment. I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy. Left to my own, I'd have a meat and potatoes kind of wardrobe. But the take me as I am, vibe could be off putting to clients and customers and that's just bad for business.

Clothing is another tool to effectively engage with clients and customers. Adapting attire to different situations and audiences, while still maintaining a professional image may require the assistance of a clothier, spouse or someone with a eye for these sorts things.

The most subtle influence can determine how clients or customers perceive us. Some key thoughts on what to wear and how to wear it best:

  • First Impressions: "There is no second chance to make a first impression." How a broker dresses contributes to the brand impression they make.

  • Non-Verbal Engagement: Clothing choices can non-verbally engage clients and customers, it can also turn them away by highlighting the differences between you.

  • Audience Consideration: Regardless if meeting a client or a customer it's more about them then it will be about us. We meet them where they are. More on that later. To dress with authenticity and respect.

  • Comfort vs. Style: Brokers should consider whether they prioritize comfort over style in their clothing choices.

  • Flexibility: While business attire may be expected, it is not always necessary. The appropriate dress depends on the situation, the client, and the environment. For instance, a broker may dress up for a business meeting or a closing. However, if showing a retail space, a more relaxed dress code is acceptable.

  • Casual Attire: Clients, especially those traveling, may be dressed casually, such as in jeans and a collared shirt.

  • Context-Specific: The dress code varies depending on the context. For example, attending an ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) event or a closing may require dressing sharp.

  • Relaxed Threads:

  • Vulnerability and Transparency: Brokers can show vulnerability and transparency with their clients thru attire.
